Port-au-Prince Inflicted with Terror

The National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH) has observed a significant upsurge of violence in the metropolitan region.  Kidnapping cases are multiplying and horrific crimes are being perpetuated with the intention of inflicting terror within the capital.  

 

>From January to November 2006, at least seven hundred and twenty-one (721) people have been assassinated, including twenty-eight (28) police officers, and four (4) UN soldiers (source: the Haitian University State Hospital (HUEH) and RNDDH).  As well, more than one hundred and fifty (150) cases of kidnapping have been reported.  During the night of 6 to 7 July 2006 alone, at least twenty-two (22) people were killed in Grand Ravine, following a confrontation between armed gangs.  This violence has intensified with the current authorities' decision to negotiate with armed criminals along with the launch of Operation Baghdad II...
