Report on International Prisoners' Day

Introduction 
 

In prelude to International Prisoners' Day, decreed by the United Nations (UN) as the last Sunday of October, the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH) designated the month of October to prisoners, as practiced for the last four (4) years.  This year, RNDDH put together a series of activities in collaboration with the Haitian Prison Authorities (DAP) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).  RNDDH's objective is to advocate on behalf of the prisoners, specifically regarding the problem of extended pre-trial detention, using the theme: « Prizonye gen Dwa pou yo jwenn Jistis, Fòk Pizonye jwenn Jistis » (Prisoners have a right to justice, they must find justice)
 

This report details the various activities implemented, as well as takes into account the judicial situation of the prisoners and their condition in the prisons. 

 

Activities Implemented 

 

RNDDH implemented activities within ten (10) of the seventeen (17) prisons throughout the country: Carrefour, Delmas, Anse à Veau, Coteaux, Jérémie, Saint Marc, Hinche, Mirebalais, Grande Rivière du Nord and Fort Liberté.  Within these prisons, the following activities were carried out: 

 

·        Met with the prisoners;

·        Met with the judicial authorities; 

·        Met with the prison authorities;

·        Met with members of the press; 

·        Provided a mobile clinic; 

·        Distributed basic medication; 

·        Cleaned and painted prison cells; 

·        Distributed kitchen utensils; 

·        Distributed hygienic kits;

·        Distributed boxes of preserved meat to supplement the provisions;

·        Distributed games for prisoners (dominos, cards); 

·        Organized a religious service in the Fort Liberté prison; 

·        Organized various competitions (football, dominos, besigues, points de croix (Haitian card games) etc)....
